3D printing is a fascinating process that has grown quite popular in the last decade– machines can now easily create a real, three dimensional object using data from a digital file to “print” the object from the ground up. Sydney bas…

WHEN 3D PRINTING becomes mainstream, it will have a major impact on many aspects of manufacturing and design processes. In the next weeks, I am writing a series of posts on how I think the 3D printing revolution will unfold and what impact it can have. In this first post, I am writing about the impact on supply chain.

rinting three dimensional objects with incredibly fine details is now possible using “two-photon lithography”. With this technology, tiny structures on a nanometer scale can be fabricated. Researchers at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Vienna) have now made a major breakthrough in speeding up this printing technique: The high-precision-3D-printer at TU Vienna is orders of magnitude faster than similar devices (see video). This opens up completely new areas of application, such as in medicine.

When I started my career as a professional artist, my first introduction to working in 3D was to create what was then referred to as 3D illustration. Basically, I created physical clay sculptures, built small props, took photographs of them, and then used those photos to create illustrations. These sculptures began to take up a lot of space, and before long I had an entire room devoted to storing them. Soon after, I discovered computer graphics and eventually 3D modeling and animation. No longer did I have to fnd an unused shoebox to store my newest character. Instead, I could simply save it to a disk. But there was only one thing missing: being able to hold my creation in my hand and place it on a shelf for others to see.

The two most powerful technologies of the 20th century—the nuclear bomb and the computer—were invented at the same time and by the same group of young people. But while the history of theManhattan Project has been well told, the origin of the computer is relatively unknown. In his new book,Turing’s Cathedral, historian George Dyson, who grew up among these proto- hackers in Princeton, New Jersey, tells the story of how Alan Turing, John von Neumann, and a small band of other geniuses not only built the computer but foresaw the world it would create. Dyson talked to Wired about the big bang of the digital universe.

3D Printing is about being able to print any object layer by layer.

I was cogitating on this one day and thought to myself:

Are there any 3 dimensional items we can’t print layer by layer?

After all, it is assumed that a 3D printer can…
